If you're shopping for MDF skirting boards or architraves, you've probably noticed that most profiles come in two options: primed and unprimed. But what does this actually mean, and which one should you choose? Here's everything you need to know.
What is Unprimed MDF?
Unprimed MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is the raw, natural board — smooth, consistent, and ready to be finished however you choose. It has a light grey/beige appearance and a fine, even surface that takes paint exceptionally well.
Choose unprimed if you:
- Plan to apply a specialist paint or primer of your own choice
- Want full control over the finish and colour
- Are working with a decorator who has their own preferred preparation process
- Need to stain or seal the board with a specific product
What is Primed MDF?
Primed MDF has been factory-coated with a white primer base coat before it reaches you. This saves time on site and means the board is ready for your topcoat of paint straight away — no sanding or priming required.
Choose primed if you:
- Want to save time on preparation
- Are painting the boards white or a light colour
- Are a DIYer looking for the quickest, easiest finish
- Want a smooth, professional base that's ready to paint immediately
Which is Better for Moisture-Resistant MDF?
Both primed and unprimed versions of our skirting boards and architraves use moisture-resistant MDF — making them ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways where humidity can be an issue. The moisture resistance is in the board itself, not the primer, so both options offer the same level of protection.

Our Recommendation
For most homeowners and tradespeople, primed MDF is the most popular choice — it's convenient, consistent, and saves valuable time on site. However, if you have a specific finish in mind or prefer to use your own primer, unprimed gives you complete flexibility.
Both options are available across our full range of profiles including Torus, Ogee, Pencil Round, Lambs Tongue, Ovolo, and more — in a variety of lengths and widths to suit any project.
